U12's V Vale of Lune & Tarleton
Jeckyll and Hyde
A spookily deserted Vale of Lune hosted the first weekends fixtures in The Lancashire Festival Cup.
Despite the acres of space an U11 size pitch was selected for us to play on, not suiting the style of wide Rugby we try to play.
With Southport playing a triangular fixture versus Vale and Tarleton it was going to be a day of hard Rugby.
The first game found us pitted against local rivals Tarleton, who could be forgiven for feeling confident after the result of our recent friendly match. However this was a different Southport team who rucked magnificently, and gave Tarleton no room in open play and also tackled well across the team. As we ran out convincing 20-5 winners thoroughly deserved.
With brief 5 minute rest we had to get ourselves back into the thick of it again playing Vale. This encounter showed the Jeckyll and Hyde side to our Rugby, with tiredness starting to show, we dropped balls, missed tackles, showed a lack of commitment by some in rucks and mauls. Injuries did not help, and the reason for the narrow pitch became apparent with Vale playing a very narrow but effective style.
However we controlled large parts of the game and only have ourselves to blame for a 10-0 loss.
The Cup has a long way to go yet but consistency is the key to success.
