Lancashire Cup On A Cold & Frosty Morning

Back to It....

Back to the coal face on Sunday morning, when the U14 boys welcomed Heaton Moor to a frosty Waterloo Road for the first Lancashire cup game of the new year.
Due to partially frozen ground conditions ‘over the wall’, it was decided the match was to be played on the first team pitch, which was great experience for the lads and another step in their rugby development!
After some early exchanges of play between the two sides, it was Southport who drew first blood following sustained pressure in the Heaton Moore 22-yard area. Dan Huggins took a short ball and waltzed over in the clubhouse corner after breaking a couple of tackles. Unsatisfied with just the try Dan made his way to beneath the sticks to ensure a successful conversion by Joe Finnegan.
Unfortunately, concentration and intensity levels dropped off from the home side as the half progressed and Heaton scored two unanswered tries, with one being successfully converted giving the visitors a 7-12 advantage at half time.
The second half started more positively, a good break from Alfi Monaghan resulted in a well taken try from Joe Finnegan, Alfi then added a further 5-points by going over to make it 17-12.
Unfortunately, the home side intensity levels again dropped off as the match drew to a close and Heaton responded with an unconverted try to bring the scores level at 17-17, which remained until the whistle was blown for full time.
