Southport RFC players Charlie Attis, Sam Cross and Dan Whalen made their debuts for Lancashire Royals on Wednesday evening.

They were the first male players in 70 years from the club to play Senior Level County representative rugby since the legendary Bobby Scott achieved this honour.

The threesome were part of the Lancashire Royals match day squad with Charlie and Dan in the starting line-up and Sam coming off the bench which took on Cheshire Harvesters at Sedgley Park RUFC. Unfortunately the Royals found themselves up against strong and well organised opponents, many of whom play club at a higher level than most of the Lancashire lads.

The Harvesters ran out 42-8 winners in the end but no matter Charlie, Sam and Dan did not look out of place at all and acquitted themselves well on the pitch, Charlie nonchalantly chalking 3 points from a successful long-range penalty. Off the pitch there was terrific numeric and vocal support from the coach load of Southport RFC club mates who made it a night to be remembered by all.

The Royals team was established by the County Board in 2016 which recognised that there are a large group of talented and ambitious players, with a strong allegiance to their clubs and Lancashire, competing at Levels 5 and under. It is a representative side giving the opportunity for these players to represent the County and rest assured the Southport trio will be champing at the bit to be selected for the next game, with plenty of their team mates equally pushing for selection in the future.
