NOT THE MOVIES BUT SOUTHPORT RFC. It’s a big one, England v Wales on the screens! In fact it’s wall to wall live and televised rugby at Waterloo Road.

On the main pitch the Firsts take on Newton-le-Willows whilst over the wall the Thirds host Merseyside Police both kicking off at 3pm, with Italy v Canada at 2.30pm and South Africa v Samoa at 4.45pm to complete the line up.

Building on the monster weekend of rugby just witnessed the clubhouse will be at even greater fever pitch as the Southport branch of the Max Boyce fan club encamps for the occasion. Did you ever see such a funny thing? Mind you it’ll be no laughing matter for England if they are not at their best.

The Firsts too will need to be at their best to keep the pressure on league pacesetters Ruskin Park in what is already looking like a two horse race. With perfect starts to the season only points difference currently separates them and at the moment it seems to be a case of who can score the most points. Park amassed a 72- 12 win last weekend at Newton, Port with a more modest 55 -12 triumph at Mossley Hill tucking in nicely behind. Every point will count and the Hillside faithful will be urging the boys in Red Black & Amber to convert every opportunity.

The Seconds now sit nicely in mid table, helped by the inability of last Saturday’s opponents De La Salle 2s to raise a team. But there is no pleasure in gaining points like this as late call offs leave players, supporters and club officials alike more than frustrated. On a happier note the Thirds chalked up a talismanic 19-5 victory at Firwood Waterloo 4 in the ‘train game’.

This was followed by an emotional evening in the clubhouse honouring the heroes of the Guinness World Record attempt game, including the presentation of a cheque for an incredible £34000 for Cystic Fibrosis and Alder Hey.The feel good factor continued the morning after with the u13s & u14s securing mpressive victories at Ormskirk, followed by the Ladies overcoming Leigh 24-5 in their first league game of the campaign.

With World Cup rugby on the screens and training on Wednesday and Thursday and a Friday Fun Night on Friday there is no let up until ‘Super’ Saturday when EVERYBODY IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD IS DRESSING UP TO BE THERE, TOO AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A BALL JUST LIKE WE ALWAYS DO.
