Hi Hooo, Hi Hooooo to the Lakes we all must go.....

Millom 2nd 10 – 32 Southport 2nds

An early bus trip to Million greeted players and a host of supporters at Waterloo Road on Saturday, with promotion now secured the spoils on offer were simply Gold or Silver medal for Captains Calamity’s crew , as Keswick in 2nd place havea game in hand that could potentially snatch victory should Southport slip up…… To make matters more interesting Millom’s home record was 3 seasons unbeaten at home, and a formidable season they had encountered still holding 3rd place in the league. So the intrepid traveller’s set on their merry way to the lakes…. HI HOOOOOOOO

Bailey selected a very strong starting 15 with even more talent on the bench, and after a profession and well-rehearsed warm up from drill master Jonah “Fist Ball” Jones, the teams physical and mental thought was focused on the win!

From the off Southport roared into life, taking contact and exerting pressure on the home side. Scrums seemed to favour the team putting in and Millom’s scrum half shone early doors with some brilliant beaks and lines through the Southport defence. But Dale, Mawdsley and Jones at the back of the pack stood strong and worked hard to turn the ball over and gain yardage. Allowing Astwood (Jr) and Kirby to drive forward
Centre Hugh Ellis struck a power punch to the home side catching a pass on the 22, and sprinting away to score under the sticks. Jake McMullen converted.

Millom were both resilient and tenacious and fought hard to reduce the lead, using 2nd row and flankers as battering rams as they charged on the Southport try line to open their try account.
Matty Astwood (Voted Man of the Match by both sides) had another Stirling performance, although carded for a high tackle earlier on the Scrum Half, his game throughout was top notch, cutting through forwards and backs alike like a fly mow through straw! And scored a delightful try in the centre after mangling a few defenders in his gargantuan wake! WHAMMO!

Millom got another try back after some strong forward work in the mauls and breaks from the flankers to leave overlaps on the right side which Southport failed to defend.

Hugh Ellis after some brilliant defence (Chasing back from his 5 metre line after an intercept from the centre) managed another darting run to notch up another try (Converted by Jake McMullen)

The final try was a well worked moved down the line with ‘Old Man’ Astwood working exceeding well with Dan Whelan to hit both centres before finding Jason Fitzpatrick (Patrick Fitzjason at the weekend) who sprinted away to complete a fantastic victory. Jason the converted, and as the final whistle blew the celebrations were unparalleled!!

Great thanks have to go to the travelling masses, and our highest accolade to Chairwoman Ann Shorrock who is and has always been a talisman and great ambassador for the club! Not only is she supportive, honest and highly entertaining, but she sinks a few drinks with the best of them and has a voice Simon Cowell would struggle to Buzz at (If IT WAS WELL PAST the watershed!! ;-)) And Sue Astwood – Who organisational skills always are on par with a budgie with no teeth! Constantly succeeding! Thank you one and all, and come again on the 28th for the final game of the season!..... (If your livers/Kidneys can take it!)

Donkeys of the day go to Callum & Hennie for getting the journey in the wrong order…. It was Play THEN drink! DOH! Forwards eh! If only they could read the plan without parental supervison!! These forwards are our safeguards…….

Try Scorers – Hugh Ellis (2), Matty Astwood, Jason Fitzpatrick
Conversions – Jake McMullen 2, Fitzpatrick
Penalties – Jason Fitzparick, JakeMcMullen
Report - Rik Potter – (In A&E on dialysis) Thanks Jonah!
