WHAT'S THE SCORE?
Southport 13* Ormskirk 34 by Gareth Lang
*There appears to be some doubt as to final score. I wasn't there but picked the score up off the web site auto-link to the league which initially had it down as 18-34; others including Pugs tell me that it was 13-34, with Josh Critchley and Clarke Walton both scoring tries but no mention of a third try scorer; the web site has now changed to 13-34; the Visiter is hedging it's bets by publishing the result as X-X so clutching at straws this suggests it was a draw so I'd settle for that in the circumstances!
Anyway here goes (please feel free to enlighten us otherwise)...
The eagerly anticipated derby in front of the largest crowd of the season saw an encouraging start by the home side as Southport dominated the first ten minutes, but as often happens the game changed when the opposition opened the scoring with a try from an opportunistic cross field kick, quickly followed by another try off the fly half’s shoulder.
Southport rallied with an unconverted try in response but faced an uphill task at 5-17 down at the break, which became a mountain when Ormskirk increased the lead early in the second half through a try from a scrum.
Again Southport hit back with a try scored following a line out to make it 13-24, but after being reduced to fourteen men with Gareth Lang banished to the sin-bin the Ormskirk took advantage by running in two further tries.
In truth Southport were out scrummed and rucked on the day. But the team is work in progress and can only learn from the painful experience on the pitch and off it as they watched Jenny Winn present the winning captain with the John Winn Cup in memory of her legendary husband who did sterling work as a member of both clubs.
Hopefully he would have been very proud of the great effort made to facilitate this and to support Queenscourt Hospice, including the pre-match demonstration tag game between the under 8 teams from the respective clubs, and Ormskirks cooperation in agreeing to an early kick-off for the league game between the respective second teams.
