U10 start the season with a splash!!!
Two hours of quality training followed by two hours of team bonding at Splash World.
The lie-ins of the summer seemed a long time ago as the new season started for the U10’s. Not sure who was more excited in my house about the start of the new season, but today finally the wait was over.
New rules for this year brings in the introduction of competing for the ball after the tackle (The Ruck), one on one ball steals, one extra player to the team and scrums. After the 3 week summer training the excitement of trying the new skills in a contact arena was on evidence today as 19 existing and 6 new players swelled the U10 ranks.
The rucking was enjoyed by all, with the kids understanding and taking it up quickly. A separate session was on offer to hone the skills as we started a training match, with development of the players between the two zones depending on their needs. Scrummaging was excellent, after our 10 men scrum exertions in Wales on tour last year, with the 2 playmakers of Dillon Smith and Charlie Hignett bossing their respective sides excellently.
The training game was littered with excellent play by all involved, with Try’s by Charlie and Dillon as well as Lewis Fusco, Ethan Owen, a barn storming run by Sonny Rix and Ollie Benford doing what Ollie Benford does, scoring at will. New starter Angus was on the end of a quality flowing move, but today was a day for the forwards. Taylor, the 2 Jacks, Kieran, James and Thomas Pilkington got to show their considerably impressive rucking skills leaving the backs the space to enjoy. Last years player of the year “Gorgeous” George Harvey showed his moves with Messers Lewis G & P, Elliot, Peter, Ben, Cohen all joining in the fun. A special well done the other new boys, Harry, Charlie, Niall, Zac and Ethan, excellent first go!!!
President Graeme Ellis finalised proceedings by welcoming all the new starters to the team, as the boys look forward to a great season at this wonderful club. The whole coaching team was introduced to the parents with their rolls and responsibilities explained, and new recruit Dave Pilkington unveiled as the U10’s deadline day signing as team manager following the Paxton’s leaving for pastures new - we wish the Paxton’s good luck in their new club.
The U10’s is an excellent age group and a pleasure to be part of. The dads are looking forward to the gents evening in November, whilst Dionne Owen has very kindly agreed to organise a ladies evening for the U10’s mum's this season.
For everyone in the U10’s however, it is all about the kids, and as promised from the end of last season, the boys enjoyed a fun afternoon at Splash World, as part of the pre arrange Team Bonding session, agreed by the parents for after the training session today. As you can see they were very hungry after their exertions.
If today is anything to go on, this season will be very special indeed!!!!
