Fleetwood 10-10 Southport
After a highly competitive match, the 2018 Bowl Final was shared between two evenly matched sides.
Fleetwood started the strongest and kept Southport pinned in their own half for the first 10 minutes and deserved the opening score. Both defences were on top with the two Charlies on the wing for Southport and Louie Southwood in the centre pulling off great cover tackles. It was Louie who won a penalty that got Southport on the score sheet. Max Tolson put in a great kick to find touch and from the resulting lineout, Thomas Hendry touched down following a great catch n drive. 5-5. Southport were now on the upper foot with great work from captain Oliver McKeown, the returning Jack Cook, John Took and scrum half Michael Lawton saw Southport creating chances. Quick hands created space out wide and after several phases Ollie Rogan crashed over to make it 10-5 at half time.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Southport going close several times. Following a pressure reliving kick from Fleetwood, the ball took an awful bounce over the Southport defence and into the on rushing Fleetwood forward's hands to score. 10 -10, game on. The last 10 minutes was all Southport, Ben Henderson at full back launched several dangerous attacks. After back to back penalties, Southport once again crashed over from the lineout only for the referee to say that Aodhan Blackburn was held up. From the resulting scrum, the Fleetwood line was peppered by attack after attack, but credit to them the stood up well in defence. A quick play the ball saw Ivan Aras finally breach the line, but once again the ref disallowed the try, ruling a knock on. With no time to restart the cup was shared.
Credit to both sides, rugby won once again
