Southport U14s Enjoy Their First Visit to Fleetwood RUFC
A good performance from some of our development players made to look even better by Fleetwood photographer Derick Thomas!
Southport U14’s travelled up the Lancashire coast to Fleetwood RUFC on Sunday on what turned out to be a beautiful day for rugby despite the soggy conditions underfoot.
Travelling numbers were severely depleted by injury and half term absence so just 15 Southport players were joined by guest centre Finn Parker before his planned permanent transfer to SRFC from his current club in the Netherlands in the summer.
However, this meant that everyone enjoyed good match time and that the travelling starting line up was a little more experienced than initially intended. This experience soon began to tell after kick off and the powerful Southport pack were able to break the gain line repeatedly and good support play enabled the visitors to convert a number of try scoring opportunities before half time.
Unfortunately, one of the home forwards were forced to leave the field at half time and the fresh faced but competent referee ordered uncontested scrums after the break.
This didn’t work in Southport’s favour and the game plan so well executed in the first half stopped functioning in the second and the visitors play became scrappy. However, Fleetwood remained resolute and their powerful centre was able to break through a number of tackles to score from his own half although this feat was soon to be matched by a memorable jinking sprint up the right wing and try by Daniel Gavan.
Alex Buck added to his try tally this season before Sam Roberts brought proceedings to a close with another successful conversion.
Credit to coach Barrie Anslow and his team who remained resolute and combative throughout despite muscles that were surely burning after 50 minutes of galloping around on what would be described as soft going in racing circles.
Finally, it appears Fleetwood have their very own “Angus” so please take a look at the excellent photos shared with us by Derick Thomas.
