First Outing for the 2018/19 U14s
Southport field a strong squad in friendly at home against West Park
West Park arrived with 12 players due to a number of their squad playing rugby league until the end of the season. However, this meant that Southport were able lend West Park 3 players in each of the three 20 minute match segments and ensure that all of the 25 strong match day squad were able to play in at least two of the three match segments.
Joe MacAdam, Ben Hunt and Harry Lambert all made strong debuts for Southport and all three performed well in slippery conditions owing to the fine rain for much of the morning.
Southport started strongly and were able to build a 12 point lead by the end of the first third, thanks to a pair of try's from Luke Hart and a conversion by Jake Lawton. A change of personal at the first break preceded Hart soring twice more in the middle segment to make the score 22 - 0 by the second break. More changes at the second break resulted in a tight final third and West Park outscored Southport by three tries to one with Ben Hunt scoring on debut and Jake Lawton converting again for the home team, resulting in a final score of 29 - 17. Thanks to West Park players and coaches who contributed to an enjoyable morning of junior rugby as both sides begin to master the uncontested line out and finally playing with a full back row in the scrum.
A good first outing of the season for Southport who look forward to a rematch at Sedgley Park next Sunday when the hosts will be looking to avenge their close defeat at Waterloo Road at the end of last season.
