U9 match report v Widnes Sunday 25th October 2015
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers...(and sisters) ...2 Henry's, 4 matches- no archers - but big guns out to do battle against the odds !
Dave McCaughrean reports on a beautiful autumnal Sunday morning at Waterloo Road on the 600th anniversary of the battle of Agincourt.
Respect to Widnes who beat us narrowly in 2 of the matches - despite superior tackling from Southport and were very impressive in the other 2 matches.
Should we be worried ? No - Southport defence was utterly fantastic - Arran, Henry Mc and Katie making tackle after tackle - led by Lewis who was outstanding !
Sniping runs by Nathan and Captain Luc were frustrated by some handling errors but Widnes could not beat the line - applause for both teams from the large crowd of parents and supporters that gathered in the weak sun - attrition - Widnes score - followed by Southport try - 10 minutes went by in a flash - respect to Widnes as they pipped a win by one try.
Training on the other pitch for Southport ensured that the players remained busy and focused on passing out of the tackle.
Captain Andrew led the charge but the guns from Widnes were too strong - despite a valiant effort from all the team - some great runs by Nik and great spirit from everyone ! Heads didn't go down and will live to fight another day !
Led by Captain Kit - a much tighter game - Henry B - new back to the game - was outstanding in attack and led the charge "For Southport !" Pounding the Widnes lines and backed up by close friend - also new to the game - Callum - fantastic run up the left side almost resulting in a try !
Mentioned in dispatches - Dominic - first time ever at the club - got stuck in at training and couldn't stop smiling - and Jack P - back from injury and desperate to play again ! Thanks for coming and see you soon !
Some tired legs now after nearly 1 1/2 hours of training and playing - lost our shape in defence - from being a horizontal line to a vertical line ! Still managed to keep the Widnesian hoards at bay with tackle after tackle - but the dam broke and Widnes scored 2 quick tries.
Coaching team chuffed to bits with all the players. Tackling on the while was excellent and far superior to Widnes who tended to scrap and scrag - stronger on attack - if we had held our shape more often ...... Who knows ! But frankly - when we have 23 players from Southport and 8 from Widnes all happy, engaged and playing this great game so well - we are all winners.
Thanks to our cracking coaching team - Ellis, Karen, Karl, Stephen and Jen (get well soon ) for all the hard work they have put in.
Training 6-7 Wednesday night at the club
Will be the focus !
