Southport Rugby Club President Ann Sharrock proudly handed out trophies and medals to the newest generation of players to grace the hallowed turf at Waterloo Road on Saturday afternoon. The under 6s, in their first-ever game, richly entertained the large crowd of parents, sponsors and supporters sat in the grandstand on the main pitch then walked out hand-in-hand with the first team players before the game against Ellesmere Port, including the clubs Director of Youth Rugby, Mike Dale.

It is a sobering thought that in eleven years time these young Sandgrounders could be in their final year in the Youth set-up to coincide with the clubs 150th anniversary, following in the footsteps of many before them. Who knows, there may be a future Gareth Lang, Shane Cook or John Gillow in the making as there was no shortage of skill and enthusiasm on display, as recorded in the match report by parent-coach Ian Tindall….

Sharks 9 v Ports 9

This was an exciting first match for the under sixes team. A good turn out meant that it was an even seven a side. Under the leadership of J. Mangley for the Sharks and A. Fusco for the Ports, the sides were evenly placed which ended up in a justified draw. Some excellent tries from most players ensured they all shared in the glory. However the hat tricks from the Sharks Ethan Owen and conversely the Ports Ella Lang demonstrated their clear determination throughout the game. There were also some striking runs from George Kenny and Cohen Murphy. What was evident though was the level of commitment from all players to maintaining defensive lines and supporting their team mates when they were in possession of the ball. This was an excellent game with an exciting glimpse of some future potential talent for Southport Rugby Football Club well refereed by the team coach and match organiser Dave Hignett.

Everyone stayed to enjoy a convivial afternoon on the new club house patio watching the Firsts complete a most enjoyable occasion with an excellent home win.
