Southport RFC U11's Face Widnes RUFC
A tough contest at home sees Southport run out winners at the final whistle
Another gloriously sunny morning on the Costa Del Southport, and yet another chance to watch some great rugby.
The pitches were crowded and the atmosphere was buzzing with teams from Wigan and Widnes joining us to stage a splendid display of rugby.
This week saw Widnes rufc U11's facing Southport rfc U11's at Waterloo Road.
Due to half term holiday commitments we only had a squad of 16 players but it proved to be just the right number for the fixture allowing us to rotate the players and give everyone equal time on the pitch. After a short warming up period the match was started at 10.30am by the talented young referee.
It quickly became apparent that the two teams were both very proficient and equally talented but both had completely differing styles of play.
Widnes playing strong direct rugby with excellent rucking and mauling proving very effective at making ground through the middle of the pitch and employing a very good tactical kicking game.
Southport displayed a strong defensive option followed by quick ball through the hands moving it quickly across the pitch allowing the speed of the backs to dominate out wide.
Both teams played excellent rugby and the game was played in a fantastic spirit with the players making the referees job an easy (and pleasurable) one, my personal thanks as referee to both teams and both sets of coaches and parents for encouraging and supporting the teams in a great spectacle of rugby.
We look forward to the return leg of the fixture in Widnes later in the season.
