Southport RFC U11's Host Sefton RUFC U11's
Southport grind out a narrow win against their toughest opposition yet
Southport RFC U11’s v Sefton RUFC U11’s
November 1st 2015 @ Waterloo Road
Shrouded in mist the Southport squad gathered on the high plains of Waterloo road. Once assembled we numbered 20 in total making the youthful Head Coaches job of selection a tricky one. It was fairly quickly decided to select 2 squads and rotate them throughout the game.
Sefton duly appeared through the low lying mist and began to warm up and were soon ready for action. The coaches agreed to split the match into 3 15 minute sessions.
With young Mr Johnson on the whistle the match duly got under way and proved early on to be a very physical and hard fought contest. Sefton played direct rugby and drove through the Southport lines to secure the first try of the game. Continuing to drive hard Sefton manged to cross the line on another 2 occasions but unfortunately knocked the ball on whilst attempting to ground it.
Eventually the Southport squad woke up and started to play the Southport way which resulted in them pulling back a try to level the scores. The match continued in the same physical manor with both teams starting to settle into their own rhythms. By the end of the second session the scores were tied at 2 tries each and the next session would prove crucial.
Southport continued to move the ball around and managed to get some quick ball from the breakdown which resulted in a classic try in the corner for Charles Attwell. When the final whistle was blown the score was 15 – 10 in favour of Southport. This was definitely the toughest game so far this season and thanks must go to both sets of players, coaches and parents for an excellent display of sportsmanship and rugby.
