Southport U12s delight at Waterloo Road

The Port Pups mean business as the full squad combines for an impressive home performance.

With Peters and Lee playing in the background and a number of casualties from the Gentlemans evening the night before squinting through dark glasses, the U12s set about their business in impressive style. Hosting a triangular tournament a full squad was assembled to show the visitors and parents alike just what these U12s had been learning in extended midweek coaching sessions.

Game 1; Southport 2, West Park 1
The opening game was an attritious affair with both teams willing to throw the ball out wide at times as required but, on balance, happier to keep it up the middle. It was a game when forwards were required to gain hard yards and the manager was required to keep his subs rolling to allow for occasional breathers. The first minutes resembled something of a rugby league match; big forwards from both sides seeing most of the ball and making the lion’s share of the tackles. When the ball came out wider, it was Dillon Smith that struck first with a punchy score from half back. An equalling score from West Park just before the break meant that captain George Harvey and his Southport marauders would need to get the job done in the second half.

A change of some personnel but no change in positive attitude meant that Southport picked up from where they left off. The second half again proved a physical contest, typified by the heroic efforts of man of the match Charlie Gorman, and it was settled by a piece of poaching by Ollie Benford who took his opportunity to score from close in as he picked up the ball from the back of a ruck and darted across the line with style.

Game 2; Southport 10, Orrell 2
Further tinkering by the management meant that the entire squad of boys had been on the field by the time that the second game got underway. New faces but continued optimism, positivity and results. The first half saw Southport catch the opposition unawares, cashing in five tries in total. The first scorer was birthday boy Charlie Gorman who ran a good twenty yards through the middle of the Orrell line to the huge delight of the watching crowd. The second score came from Thomas Pilkington, borne of keeping his discipline and staying out wide on the right hand touchline. The third try came from a characteristically weaving run from Lewis Fusco, impossible for back tracking defenders to stop once he had broken the first tackle. Man of the match Sam Cockwill added the fourth before skipper Ollie Benford notched up the fifth to have Southport five up at the break.

And so the try scoring continued in the second half, Southport relentless in making a solid start to the mini homestead that they find themselves amid. Sam Cockwill carried the ball with strength and determination, adding a further brace to get us underway; three for the match and hat trick king for the day. Ethan Owen clinically added a well taken try out on the left wing. Ollie Benford then ran in a breath taking score from deep in his own half, breaking the gain line and the pinning back his ears to outpace any last ditch efforts to catch him. Although Orrell pulled two back it was left to Mason Plunkett to round things off in style with a powerful drive right through the middle.
This was a strong performance by the Southport U12s against good opposition. There have been some difficult games this season but, with a combination of drive and discipline from both the players and coaches, there is optimism amongst the team. Every single one of the boys played their part in two terrific performances and they all went home proud of their efforts in shaping a very handsome win.
