Southport 3rd XV - Match centre

Southport 3rd XV
St Edward's O.B.
Sat 29 Sep 15:00 - Halbro North West Leagues - Division 4 West Full time

League leaders show their class but Third's stay strong despite heavy defeat. Graham Whyte reports.

Southport 3rd XV welcomed unbeaten St Edwards Old Boys 1's to Waterloo Road on Saturday afternoon. Southport Club President Graham Ellis, who played for the opposition early in his career, sponsoring the match and providing free hotpot to those who arrived early!!

The visitors have started their league campaign strongly, having brushed aside all their opponents so far. But the old dogs in the 3's welcomed the challenge of the young bucks.

Ultimately when the game started it was the difference in age that showed, with St Edwards youthful team far to fast for Southport. Ball to hand and the sheer speed of the opposition backs, proving to be the difference. Southport forwards did well to contain St Edwards pack, causing some early turnovers. But it wasn't long before Southport's tryline was breached and more try's followed.

Some improved tackling and better defence from Southport, kept the try scoring down in the second half. St Edwards running out 60-0 victors. Again plenty of positives to take out of the game for Southport, but youth won the day!!!

Bring on Wallasey in 2 weeks, we go again!!
