Southport get 2016 off to a flyer with an impressive performance against their gutsy visitors from the Cumbrian Coast. Louise Gray reports.

Southport ladies dust off the mince pies!!!!!

They surged through the cup match on Sunday against Workington Ladies, despite the terrible downfall of rain through the night Southports ground team managed to drain the water so the game could go ahead.

Great to see Kate Hussey back playing 10 and Gemma Hurst and Zoe Corfield together powering through in the centres! The First half saw Moggy. Natalie Burns, Faye Dagnall, Lisa and Becca Drescher score some brilliant tries, Hussey converting three of them.

Also some hard hits from our number 7 Alice Kirkman and brilliant support play from Dagnall, Corfield , Moggy, Lauren McCluskey and Hurst, with Hussey working some moves into the backs with the half time score Southport 31 Workington 0

The second half saw a few switch rounds with Chloe Stead and Anna Elliott on as replacements, also Louise Gray later replacing Elliott as flanker for her first game back after carrying an injury to her knee.

The onslaught continued with a debut try from Stead storming down the wing, and then captain McCluskey powered through from great ball off Dagnall who then scored herself with her brilliant side steps taking her in right under the posts!!! Burns scored her second try flying over the try line not far from the Southport 22, just unstoppable for the Workington Ladies to take down.
Hussey converted 3 of the 6 tries in the second half.

Workington Ladies holding there own, came back fighting and never gave up, but having again travelled a long way sadly for them score ended 67-0 to Southport ladies. They were however much improved from the last time they played just before Christmas.

Southport have some things they want to improve on in training for the game next weekend away at Leigh.

Woman of the match went to Gemma Hurst chosen by her own team and Alice Kirkman chosen by Workington ladies, well deserved for both..
