ALICE SPRINGS INTO ACTION ON DEBUT!

Nerves and adrenaline were evident from the start of the game. Over-eagerness resulted in Southport giving away three cheap penalties in the opening few minutes. Southport struggled to find their flow and get control of the game. Losing one of their centres to the sin bin and the other to injury didn't help their cause. Leigh made use of their extra player advantage, finding the over-lap out wide for their No.8 to break through and score.

This sparked Southport into life and the forwards started piling on the pressure, turning over ball and making yards with purposeful running. Natalie Burns soon equalled the score following a strong run out wide.

Southport were in total control of the game but failed to capitilise on their dominance before the break. Half time 5-5.

Some strong words from the coaching staff and a re-shuffle at half time and Southport began to play some excellent team rugby.
Captain Lauren McCluskey stole the ball from a ruck and got the ball out to the afternoon's play maker, fly-half Katie Hussey- she found flying centre Zoe Corfield. Corfield drew in the last man and released the supporting Faye Dagnall to speed through and score under the posts. Conversion completed by Hussey.

Southport continued their dominance, winning penalties at the breakdown. Resulting in McCluskey powering through the tiring Leigh defence to increase the score. Hussey again adding the extras.

Another excellent team try scored by new player, Alice Kirkman capped off a fabulous afternoon for her in both attack and defence- showing what a valuable addition to the squad she is. Final score 24-5. Kirkman and Burns deservedly sharing the girl of the game award.
