Southport Senior Colts kicked off the new season with a trip to Manchester to play Aldwinians. Unfortunately the Colts only had 13 men so sportingly Aldwinians lent us two players to complete the team. Southport started the game and chased the ball up field and with early pressure were given a penalty for off side. Southport took the initiative and with the wind behind them Ben Cresswell kicked the three points. Score 0 - 3.
Much of the play thereafter was evenly fought around the centre of the the field with the ball changing hands often. The Aldwinians winger managed to break free but a timely tackle from full back Bradley Missell saved the day. Aldwinians turned on the pressure and kept Southport pinned back and we were penalised for off side. They decided to kick the penalty but failed to score. Southport came back at them and earned a line out on Aldwinians 22 but a bad throw gave possession back to them. From that scrum, Aldwinians move forward into our territory and Southport clear the ball up field and earn another penalty. This time they ran the ball and scored in the far corner - one of the Aldwinians who was playing for Southport was the try scorer. Unfortunately Ben missed the conversion. 0 - 8. Half time.
Alwinians kicked off with the wind behind them and immediately pressurised the Southport defence. They broke free but another timely and effective tackle by Brad stopped a certain try. This inspired the home team who move forwards to the 22 but good defence from Southport and bad passing by Aldwinians led to a great clearance. Number 8 (Joe Ryan) inside his own half kicked the ball and chased to earn a line out 10 metres out. A text book move resulted in the ball being passed along the line across the width of the field for Dan Cresswell to score the second try. Twin brother Ben then converted Score 0 - 15. Southport kept a clean sheet to the end of the game.
