SOUTHPORT RUE MISSING SENIOR COLTS.
Southport could only muster 11 players so sportingly Congleton lent us three of their players to make it 14 A side. Kevin Rodd reports.
Congleton kick off into a strong headwind and charge down field and win the ball. A forward pass earns Southport a scrum. The home team applied strong pressure and good passing gets them up to Congleton's 22 only to loose the ball and Congleton clear up field out to their wing who ran throught the defence to score 0 - 5. Conversion sucessful 0 - 7.
A knock on by Congleton in their 22 gives Southport a scrum but bad handling meant we lost the ball. Congleton gain ground passing the ball throught the middle before crossing the try line, 0 - 12. Conversion scored 0 - 14. Congleton are on a roll and pressure the Southport defence who rise to the challenge . Unfortunately we were unable to stop the ball reaching the hands of their winger who scored in the corner 0 - 19. Conversion missed. Half time.
The second half started with Southport playing into the wind and Nathan Walsh charged though to the 5 metre line before being brought to a stop by a solid defence. This seemed to motivate Southport who attacked Congleton and Ramiro Rissotto ( the Italian Stallion) crossed the try line . Unfortunately the ball was judged to be held up. From the resulting 5 metre scrum quick thinking by scrumhalf Jamie Rodd crossed the line to score 5 - 19. Billy Nichol converted. 7 - 19. Play was more evenly contested in the middle of the pitch until Lewis Caldwell was given a yellow card for a high tackle. Congleton kicked for goal but missed from the penalty. Congleton with a man over pressed forward and keep Southport pinned in their own 22. A very clever drop kick into the corner gave Congleton a lineout 5 metres out from which they score in the corner. 7 - 24. Conversion scored. 7 - 26. Southport were abel to defend their ground until the final whistle. Final score 7 - 26.
