Southport RFC make the short journey to neighbouring Tarleton RUFC this Saturday, looking to return to winning ways following consecutive league defeats. With both the First XV and Second XV set to face their Tarleton counterparts, it promises to be a busy afternoon of local rugby at Carr Lane.
Just over 12 miles separate the two clubs by road, making this one of Southport's shortest away trips of the season. However, despite the relatively modest distance between them, recent history suggests that Saturday's encounter will be anything but straightforward.
Southport enter the weekend sitting sixth in Counties 1 ADM Lancashire & Cheshire, having recorded two victories from their opening five league fixtures following promotion as Counties 2 champions last season.
An impressive 38–19 victory away to Liverpool St Helens at the beginning of October was followed by a convincing 37–17 home success against Broughton Park, demonstrating Southport's ability to compete at the higher level.
However, consecutive defeats at Waterloo Road have interrupted that momentum. A remarkable 89-point encounter against New Brighton ended in a narrow 48–41 defeat, before difficult weather conditions played their part in last weekend's 19–7 loss to Aldwinians.
While results have been mixed, Southport have shown plenty of attacking promise during the opening weeks of the campaign. With 143 points scored across their five league fixtures, the challenge now is to find greater consistency and turn competitive performances into further victories.
THE OPPOSITION
Tarleton have experienced a challenging opening to the 2026/27 season, currently occupying twelfth position in the league table following five consecutive defeats.
However, their recent performances suggest that their position at the foot of the standings does not necessarily reflect the level of competition they have provided.
A particularly narrow 22–21 home defeat against Liverpool St Helens on 17 October demonstrated their ability to compete in closely contested encounters, while last Saturday's 26–17 defeat away to New Brighton provided further evidence that they remain capable of troubling established opposition.
Playing on home soil, Tarleton will undoubtedly view Saturday as an opportunity to register their first league victory of the campaign.
Southport, meanwhile, will be equally determined to build upon the positives from their opening fixtures and secure an important result on the road.
HISTORY FAVOURS THE HOSTS
Despite Southport entering the fixture six places above Tarleton in the league standings, the historical record offers an interesting perspective on Saturday's encounter.
According to historical research compiled by Daniel Hayes of Southport Central, the clubs have met on eight recorded occasions since September 2018, with Tarleton holding the advantage through six victories to Southport's two.
Perhaps the most notable statistic is that Southport have yet to record a victory at Carr Lane across their four previous visits during that period.
The clubs last met during the 2022/23 season, when Tarleton completed the league double. A 19–6 victory at Waterloo Road in September 2022 was followed by a comprehensive 67–26 home success in February 2023.
Southport's two victories during the same period both came at Waterloo Road, winning 42–20 in September 2018 and 20–18 in September 2021.
Those results underline the challenge that has historically faced Southport when travelling to Tarleton, regardless of league position or recent form.
Saturday therefore presents an opportunity not only to return to winning ways, but also to secure a first recorded victory at Carr Lane since the beginning of the available head-to-head records in 2018.
A DOUBLE HEADER OF LOCAL RUGBY
The afternoon will also see Southport's Second XV face Tarleton's Second XV, providing another opportunity for the club's senior sides to continue their respective league campaigns.
Both fixtures are scheduled to kick off at 2:15pm.
With two Southport sides in action against familiar local opposition, the club will be hoping for strong travelling support throughout the afternoon.
For the First XV, the immediate priority is to rediscover their winning form and build upon the encouraging signs shown since returning to Counties 1.
Tarleton, meanwhile, will be determined to make home advantage count as they search for their first points of the campaign.
While the league table currently favours Southport, previous meetings serve as a reminder that form and standings rarely tell the complete story in encounters between familiar opponents.
With plenty at stake for both clubs, Saturday promises another competitive afternoon of local rugby.
All travelling support would be greatly appreciated as both Southport sides look to secure positive results at Carr Lane.
