MATCH PREVIEW | Southport RFC v New Brighton RUFC

Southport RFC

Counties 1 ADM Lancashire & Cheshire | Saturday 17 October 2026 | Kick-off: 3:00pm | Waterloo Road

Southport Target Third Consecutive Victory as New Brighton Visit Waterloo Road

Southport RFC return to Waterloo Road this Saturday looking to extend their winning run to three matches as they welcome New Brighton RUFC in Counties 1 ADM Lancashire & Cheshire.

Following an opening-day defeat to Eccles, Southport have responded in impressive fashion, recording back-to-back victories over Liverpool St Helens and Broughton Park to build momentum in the early stages of their league campaign.

A historic 38–19 victory away at Liverpool St Helens was followed by an equally convincing 37–17 home success against Broughton Park last weekend, with Southport demonstrating both attacking quality and resilience across the two performances.

Those results leave Southport with two victories from their opening three league fixtures, having scored 95 points and conceded 76.

Visitors Looking to Return to Winning Ways

Saturday's opponents, New Brighton, arrive at Waterloo Road with an identical record of two wins and one defeat.

The Wirral outfit began their campaign with an impressive 42–18 victory over Liverpool St Helens before edging a high-scoring encounter against Aldwinians, winning 43–40. However, their unbeaten start was brought to an end last weekend following a 32–17 defeat against Didsbury TOC H.

With both sides having demonstrated their attacking capabilities during the opening weeks of the season, Saturday's meeting promises to be a competitive encounter between two teams looking to establish themselves in Counties 1.

Previous Meetings

Recent history favours the visitors, with New Brighton winning four of the six recorded encounters between the clubs since October 2016.

New Brighton claimed victory in both meetings during the 2023/24 campaign, including a 36–14 win at Waterloo Road, before completing the double with a 27–10 success on the Wirral in April 2024.

However, Southport have enjoyed success against Saturday's opponents on home soil in previous seasons, recording a narrow 23–22 victory in February 2017 before securing a 31–20 win twelve months later.

With Southport now looking to continue their positive start to life in Counties 1, the hosts will be determined to build on their recent performances and reverse that more recent head-to-head record.

Another Big Afternoon at Waterloo Road

Saturday presents another opportunity for Southport to build momentum in front of their home supporters, with confidence growing following two impressive victories.

A third consecutive success would further strengthen Southport's start to the campaign as they look to establish themselves in the division.

The 1st XV will also be joined at Waterloo Road by the 3rd XV, with both sides in action against opposition from across the Wirral.

Both fixtures kick off at 3:00pm, with free entry and the clubhouse and bar open throughout the afternoon. Supporters are encouraged to come down and get behind the lads.
