Match Preview: Southport travel to Heaton Moor for season finale

Southport RFC23 Apr - 14:27

Southport head to Heaton Moor on the final day of the season knowing a big away performance could decide the league title.

Southport head to Heaton Moor on Saturday for their final league fixture of the 2025/26 season, knowing a stern test awaits against a physical and well organised side that has proved a difficult opponent for many across the division. The game kicks off at 3.00pm at Green Lane, with Southport currently first in Counties 2 ADM Lancashire and Cheshire and Heaton Moor sitting fourth.

There is plenty riding on the contest. Southport and Bolton both go into the final weekend seeking to be crowned champions, while Heaton Moor have already shown throughout the season that they are more than capable of causing problems for any side in the league. It sets up an excellent final day, with Southport fully aware that they will need to be at their very best away from home if they are to finish the campaign in the strongest possible fashion.

The reverse fixture earlier in the season saw Southport produce an impressive performance to beat Heaton Moor 35 to 19 at Waterloo Road. That result will give the visitors confidence, but there will be no sense of complacency heading into Saturday’s game. Heaton Moor have shown real quality across the season, recording notable wins including victories over Sefton, Leigh, Garstang, Glossop and Tyldesley, and they will be determined to finish their own campaign on a high in front of their home support.

Southport travel in strong form. Their last two league outings have brought an excellent 24 to 12 away win at Littleborough, followed by a commanding 54 to 10 home victory over Glossop. Those results have kept the pressure firmly on at the top end of the table and ensured that everything remains alive going into the final round of fixtures.

Heaton Moor, meanwhile, edged past Tyldesley 24 to 23 in their most recent home outing before suffering a 56 to 10 defeat away at Bolton last weekend. That sequence perhaps underlines exactly what Southport can expect on Saturday: a side that is tough to break down on its own ground and one that will want to respond strongly in its final appearance of the season.

For Southport, the challenge is a simple one in principle, even if difficult in practice. The final game of the season presents an opportunity to finish with intent, to handle the pressure of an away trip against top four opposition, and to show once again the quality and character that has driven the side throughout the campaign. With the stakes high and the opposition strong, all the ingredients are there for what should be a superb contest.
