The club is saddened to hear that former player Peter Walton has passed away. Peter is standing back right in a team photo taken circa1969-70.

Close friend Graham Thompson passed on the news that Peter died on Monday after losing a battle with cancer. A KGV old boy he was only 65. His commemoration service is at St James Church, Birkdale on April 2nd at 2.00pm.

Graham recalls that Peter was unable to play for Southport as often as he would have liked as his family ran a furniture store in Leigh and he worked most Saturdays. His father, George, played for the club in the 30s and was Mayor of Southport in 1972-73.

The players in the photo are:

Back row (L-R) Ken Worthington (Chairman of Selectors), Roy 'Bede' Hatfield, Peter Thompson, Dave James, Geoff Pearson, Denis Davies, Dave Allardice, Terry Pike, John Woodcock, Peter Walton;
Front row (L-R) Bob Ratcliffe (Club Chairman), Terry Maloney, John Rostron, Peter Sanderson (Captain), Tim Vincent, Peter Forshaw, Sir Herbert Barber ( Club President),
Kneeling (L&R) Andrew Thompson, Robin Porter.

Graham comments that It seems an odd line up as 16 players are shown but it was taken in the days before substitutes were allowed. He thinks that the extra number has to be in the backs who are all Old Georgians and that perhaps it was a game against the school? He also cannot remember Peter ever playing any position other than scrum half.

However, the club is proud to remember Peter and we pass on our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
