Southport RFC aim to add Lancashire Plate to league title

Can it be a Double

Southport RFC will look to add county silverware to their league title when they face Bolton RUFC in the Lancashire Plate Final at Widnes RUFC on Saturday 23 May, kick off at 3.30pm

It has the makings of a closely contested final. Southport and Bolton were the two outstanding sides in Counties 2 ADM Lancashire & Cheshire this season, with Southport finishing top on 79 points and Bolton second on 78 after both clubs had played 18 matches.

Southport’s appearance in the final also comes a year after they lifted the Counties 2 North Plate. Last season’s success came through the Papa John’s Men’s Community Cup structure, while the Lancashire Plate is one of Lancashire RFU’s county competitions.

The Lancashire Plate was introduced in the 1982/83 season, when Old Aldwinians became the inaugural winners. Liverpool Collegiate have since won the trophy four times, while Eccles and De La Salle have each lifted it three times.

Victory at Widnes would give Southport their first Lancashire Plate title. Bolton have won the competition once before, in 2014.

Ground admission is £5, with concessions priced at £3. An online match programme is also due to be published ahead of the game.
