Southport Ladies triumphant over Crewe and Nantwich Ladies

Southport Ladies welcomed Crewe and Nantwich Ladies to Waterloo Road this Sunday in only their 2nd home game of the season and even with the wet and windy weather, a good crowd gathered to cheer them on.
A minutes silence was observed to mark Rememberance Sunday and when the game got underway the Southport Ladies came out of the blocks, all guns blazing, determined to put on a good performance for their supporters. With 10 tries and 10 conversions, they did not disappoint!

With only 5 minutes gone on the clock, a timely pass to flanker Griffiths put her through for the first try of the game, the conversion good from Gaskin. Southport continued the intensity and when the ball found full back Birchall, she charged through to dot down under the posts, allowing Gaskin to convert with ease. With Crewe persistant, they started to string phases of play together but with some great defence by Port, the ball was turned over and Centre Tavernier ran in for the try. Again, converted by Gaskin.
Crewe continually put Port to the test in the scrums but strong work by the pack allowed Port to keep control. Speedy winger Jessop was next on the score sheet with a mazey run down the wing to cross the whitewash - the conversion good.
From the restart, Port continued to make strong carries and when the forwards had made the metres, Fly half Gaskin called for the ball, and with a cheeky little show and go, ran through for Ports 5th try and conversion.
Half time score 35-0

The second half saw debuts for Jamieson and Dietrich who showed huge confidence, with both making an impact. With Port full of confidence and making solid yards, another darting run from flanker Griffiths saw her charge over for her second of the game and again, another successful conversion. From the restart play settled in the middle of the pitch and when Crewe were awarded the penalty, they began to piece their phases of play together all the way up to the 5 metre line. A combination of sheer determination from Crewe and a lapse in concentration by Port saw Crewe drive over for the try which was converted. With that wake up call, Port re took control of the game and when Birchill ran in three more tries, taking her total to four for the day, the final whistle blew and Port were runaway winners - 70-7

A fantastic display by Southport Ladies against a very physical and established Crewe side, however as always, there are things the ladies can take into training this week to improve ready for their away fixture at Harrogate Ladies this coming Sunday.
A massive thank you to all the supporters and sponsors who really are hugely appreciated!
